In the number line, you may find various types of numbers which are classified or divided on the basis of the factors. Any number which includes more than two factors can be defined as a composite number. For example, 4 is a composite number because it has three factors, i.e. 1, 2, and the number itself. Similarly, 3 is not a composite number because it has only two factors, i.e 1 and the number itself. These types of numbers are known as prime numbers. (any number with exactly two factors). Some examples of composite numbers are as follows: 4, 8, 9, 10, 12, 15, etc. The composite number is broadly classified into two different types: even composite numbers and odd composite numbers. In this article, we shall cover various topics regarding numbers such as odd numbers, types of composite numbers, differences between odd and even numbers, and many more.
What are Odd Numbers?
Any number that cannot be written down or arranged in pairs can be defined as odd numbers. If we go through history, we may find that the term odd numbers were first coined by the Greek mathematicians. One of them was ‘Pythagoras’. The one who came up with the idea of the Pythagoras theorem. Some examples of odd numbers are as follows: 1, 3, 7, 9, 11, 13, etc. There are various properties related to the odd numbers. Some of them are as follows: the addition of two odd numbers always produces an even number. For example, 3 + 3 = 6 which is an even number. The subtraction of two different odd numbers also produces an even number. For example, 5 – 3 = 2 (an even number) . We shall discuss some more amazing concepts in the next paragraph.
Odd Numbers Vs Even Numbers
The following points help to differentiate an odd number from an even number.
● Any number that cannot be written down or arranged in pairs can be defined as odd numbers whereas numbers that can be written down or arranged in pairs can be defined as even numbers.
- The addition of two different odd numbers will always give you the resultant value as an even number. But the addition of two different even numbers will always produce an odd number. For example, 3 + 5 = 8 (for the additive property of odd numbers), 4 + 5 = 9 (the additive property of an even number) .
- An even number is always divisible by 2 whereas an odd number is never divisible by 2.
● Some examples of odd numbers are as follows: 1, 3, 7, 9, 11, 13, etc. Some examples of even numbers are 2, 4, 8, 10, 16, 20, and so on.
Type of Composite Numbers
As mentioned above, any number which includes more than two factors can be defined as a composite number. There are two types of composite numbers: the odd composite and even composite numbers. The two types of composite numbers are:
- Prime numbers are those numbers that consist of only two factors, i.e. 1 and the number itself. All the numbers which are odd and not prime can be considered as odd composite numbers. For example, 9, 15, 21, 27 are considered odd composite numbers.
- Similarly, all the even numbers which are not considered as prime can be defined as even composite numbers. Although, there is only one even prime number i.e. 2. Except the number ‘2’ there are no such prime numbers. Therefore, all even numbers except 2 are even composite numbers. For example, 4, 6, 8, 12, 14, and so on.
