HDR Photography: The Definition
HDR photography is a technique that merges multiple images or videos into one to achieve a high dynamic range image. It is often used to capture the lighting of a subject, but it can also be used to capture a special moment or embrace the light of a special moment.
This said technique in photography tones down extreme contrast in a photograph, usually making the foreground elements less bright and the background elements brighter. HDR or High Dynamic Range is a great way to surprise your viewers with a picture that contains many highlights and shadows.
HDR And the Concept Behind It

- Take photos on auto mode. Like any other photo, they need to be taken in auto mode. This is because all of the camera’s settings are stored in auto mode, and if you don’t use auto mode to snap the photo, all of your settings are lost. (If you do want to do an HDR photo, then your settings are saved in the auto mode, but be sure to include the Camera (Focus) menu in your list of camera settings.)
- Analyze and process your images. One of the most important parts of taking a good HDR image is looking at the image you are about to capture and processing it. By processing the image you can capture, you can make the HDR process much more effective, leading to better and more interesting images.
- Another important thing to understand is that a High Dynamic Range image can be either a JPEG image or a RAW image. JPEG images are compressed files, while RAW is not compressed. The compression of a JPEG file is lossy, meaning that it loses information in the process. This is true for all compressed files; even JPEGs with a smaller compression ratio have some loss of information. The higher the compression ratio, the greater the loss of information.
